KABUL, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) – “The US confession to the murderous attack on civilians in my house virtually demonstrates their arrogance in targeting innocent civilians. Killing civilians is a blatant crime and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.” , Emal Ahmadi, brother of the late Zamarai Ahmadi, told Xinhua.
Zamarai, along with nine members of his family, including seven children aged 2 to 15, were killed in a US drone attack on August 29, just a day before the end of the evacuation of US forces from Afghanistan.
The Pentagon claimed that US troops had targeted a suicide bomber affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) group, who posed an imminent threat to US-led troops at the Kabul airport. Defending the operation, US General Mark Milley insisted the attack was “fair”.
However, on Friday, US military officials confessed to “making a mistake” and apologized.
“Our investigation now concludes that the strike was a tragic mistake,” said US Central Command chief General Frank McKenzie, adding that the Pentagon was considering reparations.
“Apologizing is not enough. The US government should pay compensation in addition to bringing the culprits to justice, ”said Emal, whose 3-year-old daughter was also killed.
Sitting in front of a wrecked car, saddened Emal whispered that his brother Zamarai was a kind person and had no relation to ISIS or any other terrorist group.
The targeted house housed four brothers and all the victims were family, Ahmadi said, adding that the seven children, including three of the late Zamarai, were killed inside the parked car in the deadly airstrike.
Zamarai was just coming home from the office when the drone fired.
“By targeting a civilian house and killing civilians, including innocent children, the US military has made a grave mistake. Killing civilians is a war crime and those who committed the crime must be convicted and brought to justice. justice and must be punished, ”Emal said.
“I want compensation for the victims and punishment for the perpetrators of the crime that US officials have called a serious mistake. And if this were ignored, I would pursue the case internationally and contact all relevant judicial organizations to ensure the justice, ”Emal said.
In support of Emal’s demands, Abdul Aziz, a local defense lawyer, considers the killing of civilians a war crime, saying the perpetrators of the crime must be brought to justice.
